Description

Harrison Bird Brown (1831-1915) painted the Presumpscot River in Portland as seen from Pride's Bridge.

Brown, who worked as a sign and banner painter, was best known for marine and landscape paintings -- especially of the White Mountains. A native of Portland, he was president of the Portland Art Society in 1892. He also moved to London that year.

The Longfellow family hung this painting in their sitting room at the family home in Portland.
