An architectural drawing for the Eastern Maine Insane Hospital.
The hospital, the second state mental health facility built in Maine, sits atop Hepatica Hill. It opened on July 1, 1901.
It was built because of overcrowding at the hospital in Augusta, which opened in 1840.
It was thought that patients needed rest and the site was away from downtown Bangor.
