John M. Gould, a native of Portland, worked most of his life as a banker in Portland.

Gould (1839-1930) is best know for his History of the First-Tenth-Twenty-ninth Maine Regiment, based on a diary he kept during the Civil War. He served as major of the 29th Maine.

Gould continued to keep a diary throughout his life. He was active in veterans organizations and in church and temperance causes.
