John M. Gould (1839-1930), a bank clerk in Portland, and four other men hiked Mt. Carrigain in June 1875. The men were all part of the White Mountain Club of Portland.

Gould wrote the account of the hike in his diary.

Other participants were Edward S. Morse (1838-1925), a zoologist; his brother, George F. "Fred" Morse (1834-1925), an artist and official at the Portland Co.; Joseph Sanger and Henry W. Swasey, of Standish, a lawyer.

The guide was John O. Cobb.
