Children at beach, Lubec, ca. 1903, ca. 1903

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

Old time photographs of the extensive mud flats at the “S Curve” on South Lubec Road are rarely seen. Fundy Bay tide will inundate this area in several hours. Lubec houses and commercial buildings are on the left horizon, and a few structures to the right on Campobello Island, New Brunswick. The girl in the checkered dress is Evelyn C. Pike, born on July 30, 1892, who appears about eleven years old; hence the estimated date of this image. Identification of the other three youing people and their dog is not at hand. This beach lies directly across South Lubec Road from “Pike’s Puddle,” a pond formed when Alger Pike (1899-1980) dammed a stream entering the sea to form a duck shooting site. The pond remains in the family as of 2010.
