Description
Writing from London to his aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce in Portland, Josiah Pierce (1824-1913) expressed his sympathy. He wrote, "no one knows better that he had even nobler qualities than the divine voice of poetry which has made him so famous and beloved through the world."
Pierce commented on how well know and loved Longfellow's poetry was in Russia and England. He wrote, "The late Empress of Russia, a very noble woman, was very fond of his work, and read them all."
Pierce had lived many years in Russia before moving to England in about 1870. He was a lawyer who worked for a railroad management company.
