Description

A typical Aroostook County potato harvest crew is shown on a postcard with a 1916 postmark.

On the right is a horse-drawn one-row Hoover Paddle Digger with paddles on its wheels. The turning of the wheels on the digger powered the digging mechanism.

On the left is a drop-axle wagon loaded with empty potato barrels. Drop axle, or crank axle, construction lowered the freight bed, giving the wagon a lower center of gravity than traditional wagons for more efficient use of the horses's work. The lower freight bed height made it easier to load.
