Description
Fifth Regiment Infantry soldier Marshall S. Phillips, in a letter from Boonsboro, Maryland, described July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg as, "one of the most desprit and hardest fought battles was fought that has been fought during the war resulting in a complete union victory..."
Phillips was a shoemaker in Auburn before enlisting in the 5th Regiment.
He wrote that his regiment was not engaged in the fighting. He also told his wife that over the past three weeks, the regiment had marched more than 250 miles.
He signed the letter, "From your absent but not forgetful husband."
