Description
Scaffolding surrounds the upper portion of the steeple as workmen prepare to remove the structure. The lower portion of the steeple was removed as well and the former church became the Rialto movie theater in 1938. The theater operated into the 1950's and closed shortly after television could be viewed in Hallowell. The building them became a warehouse and fell into disrepair. The parish hall to the right became the Goodrich-Caldwell American Legion Post #6.
The Universalist Church was built on the southeast corner of Central and Second Streets in 1843. The front steps extended from side to side and were said to be an imitation of Pilate's house in Jerusalem. Half of the basement was rented to a butcher. Old-timers remembered that the butcher cooked on Sundays and the appetites of the faithful were whetted during long sermons. The parish was active for about fifty years.
