North Yarmouth Fire Company helmet, ca. 1945

Description

This helmet commemorates the founding of the North Yarmouth Fire Company, incorporated in 1945. In 1944 each month, April through October, North Yarmouth suffered a major structure fire. At Town Meeting in 1945 citizens voted to raise $700 for fire protection and on March 25, 1945 a group of citizens assembed at Town Hall to form a fire department.

The following officers were chosen: Herman Smith, Chief; Roy Loring, Clerk; Lester Smith, Treasurer: and Harold Appleby, H. Floyd Ames and Carl Burrows, Captains. Members also included Donald Smith, Forest Doughty, H.M. Lawrence, Mason Pratt, Harold Small, Henry Fountain, Frank Parker, Sidney Smith, Maurice Small, Marvin Beckwith, Arthur Atkins, Elwood Gerry, and Everett Yates.
