Description
Blue Hill was without its own daily newspaper of record for most of its history, except for a short-lived effort in the early 19th century. Jerry and Gayle Durnbaugh started the Weekly Packet in December 1960. Local citizens volunteered to help get out the first issues of the paper. This photograph shows three volunteers along with Mrs. Durnbaugh preparing the first issue -- December 1, 1960 -- for publication. From left to right, Harry Drew, Bette Britt, Fern Leach, and Gayle Durnbaugh. The newspaper's first office was in the Pendleton House on Water Street in the suite of rooms that once housed the Customs office and as of April 2010 houses The Pantry restaurant. The paper has published continuously since 1960.
