Description

The King Burial Ground is located on the top of a hill on Susan Avenue which is off Broadturn Road in Scarborough, Maine. The granite stone and plaque commemorates the three King brothers: William, Rufus and Cyrus. It is also the gravesite of their father Richard, his two wives and a grandmother.The sons are not buried here.

Cyrus, the youngest of the King brothers, was born on September 6, 1772. He was a lawyer, member of Congress, and one of the founders of Saco Academy(now Thornton Academy)in Saco,Maine. He died on April 25,1817 shortly after leaving Congress and is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, Maine.

William the middle son was born on February 9, 1768. He was the first Governor of Maine and helped in Maine's separation from Massachusetts in 1819. William died on June 17, 1852 and is buried in Bath, Maine.

Rufus, the oldest son was born on March 24,1755. Rufus was twice a candidate for vice president, and once for president. He is known for his part in the framing of the Constitution. He was also twice a Minister to Great Britian. Rufus died on April 29, 1827.
