Fort Fairfield Exchange Hotel, ca. 1915

Contributed by Penobscot Marine Museum

Description

The Fort Fairfield Exchange Hotel on Main Street in about 1915.

Because of the town's location on the Aroostook River near the New Brunswick border, Fort Fairfield was a central location during the "Aroostook War," a dispute over the boundary between New Brunswick and Maine. The boundary was settled by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842.
