Description

This audio segment describes how many barrels of potatoes can be picked by hand. In 1962, the potato picker, a young man from Quebec, was able to pick 142 barrels at the Gallagher farm in Fort Fairfield. Former farmer Don Gallagher talks about how the picker's section was lengthened as he got older. The potato picker from Quebec was very proud of this effort and wanted to tell his friends back home.

This description gives some indication of what is involved in early potato harvesting methods.
