Eben Carleton letter seeking forgiveness, Blue Hill, 1829

Contributed by Jonathan Fisher Memorial, Inc.

Description

This letter titled "Eben Carleton's Confession" was written for Carleton by the Rev. Jonathan Fisher.

It reads, "I, the Subscriber, acknowledge that a few weeks ago, at the trial of the speed of a couple of horses, without due consideration I laid a small bet upon one of them; I am now sensible that it was unbecoming a Christian Professor to do it; that it is of a tendency to encourage a species of gaming, injurious to the morals of religion of a christian community.

"I ask forgiveness of God and of this church for this wrong; I pray that I may be more watchful and circumspect in the time to come."

It was signed by Eben Carleton and dated July 18, 1829.
