Letter from Andrew Wood to Rev. Jonathan Fisher, Blue Hill 1819

Contributed by Jonathan Fisher Memorial, Inc.

Description

This is a letter from Andrew Wood of the first Baptist Church in Blue Hill to Jonathan Fisher of the first Congregational Church of Blue Hill proving that he did not baptize a child. A committee of men including George Stevens and Jonathan Buck among others took in "to consideration the complaint of the Rev. Mr. Jonathan Fisher."

The mother of the child, Eliza Day, "reported that the Rev. Mr. Fisher did in the year 1812 Baptize her infant child on the day of its death in her own house, she then living in Mr. Fisher's family;...."

It goes on to say that they believe she "had some reason from what she saw and heard to believe that the child was Baptized but we do believe she was mistaken, but that she had no intention to injure Mr. Fisher's character, nor did she willfully report a falsehood...; but that she was too assertive in her assertions; and that she be reproved and admonished by the church to which she belongs."

The letter was written 7 years after the incident.
