Description

John D. Lord and family are seen standing in front of their Middle Street home in Hallowell, ca. 1879. John Lord was an architect and builder. He supervised the construction of the Maine State Capital building in Augusta after the cornerstone was laid in 1829. "When it was building Mr. and Mrs. Lord drove a horse and chaise which they occupied up the staging and upon what is now the floor of the Representatives." Lord was also selected the architect and builder of the Hallowell House. Later, he and his wife moved to Massachusetts for 25 years while he helped construct the U. S. Arsenal at Springfield.
