Title page of Jonathan Fisher's 'Scripture Animals,' 1834

Contributed by Jonathan Fisher Memorial, Inc.

Description

The Reverend Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill began writing his book Scripture Animals, or Natural History of the Living Creatures Named in the Bible Written Especially for Youth Illustrated with Cuts, in 1819 and finished in 1832. This book has his own carved wood-block prints of every animal, bird, and insect in the Bible, with a description of each animal and the role it plays, along with which book in the Bible it is found.

The title page has his profile between the trees in the wood-cut print. This book is an example of his tenacity and enthusiasm.

He had 1000 copies of the book published. The entire cost of the edition was $600.00. Fisher purchased 625 for private sale and his son-in-law, Capt. Jeremiah Stevens, purchased 125 copies. The remaining 250 were listed by publisher William Hyde in his account to the author as sold at .60 cents each.
