Description

A group of African-American soldiers who were stationed in North Yarmouth during World War II pose in a truck in front of the box cars where they lived at Route 9 and North Road.

The soldiers were guarding a Grand Trunk Railroad bridge in Dunn's Corner, North Yarmouth, to preserve access to Canada by rail in case the ports were bombed.

Soldiers are, from left, Sgt. McArthur Stafford of New York, Pvt. Harding Moore of North Carolina, Pvt. Howard Stringfellow of Alabama, Florentino Lopez of New York, Henry G. Roberts of New York, Robert A. Stephens of New York, and Charles E. Rountree of Baltimore.

The photo was taken in July 1942.
