Description
This photograph shows the Sanford & Cape Porpoise Railway trestle with the Casino in the background on left. In order to make the railway more profitable, the directors of the S & CP elected to build a casino, providing food, dancing, and various forms of entertainment throughout the summer season or as long as the weather allowed. The grand opening of this popular destination took place on July 20, 1900. It burned to the ground on Labor Day night in 1915. The revenue it generated for the railway supplemented the shipping of coal, offloaded at Cape Porpoise from schooners and bound for mills in Sanford.
