Solon Chase and "Them Steers," Turner, ca. 1873

Contributed by Turner Museum and Historical Society

Description

Solon Chase of Turner wrote an account of "Them Steers" in The Lewiston Journal, Wednesday, November 24, 1909. The point of his story was that the pair of steers he bought and fed shrank in value. If he had bought government bonds with the money, instead of steers, his investment would have grown.

"Them steers" became the slogan of the Greenback party in Maine, with which Chase was affiliated. The Greenbacks advocated for the circulation and use of paper money.

He said, "I was robbed of my hay and the same bond that would buy my steers at three years would buy them steers at four years old. The bond holder gets by that operation not only the growth of the steers between the ages of three and four, but he also got the hay that made 'em grow."

Solon further explained, "That was the makin' of me. If I had said 'those steers' it wouldn't have attracted any attention, but them steers add what I used to call the tramp of the cowhide boots flocking to join the green back throng made the people sit up and take notice."
