Former Town/City Hall, Bath, ca. 1933

Contributed by Patten Free Library

Description

This black-and-white photograph by Herbert L. Douglas appears to have been taken in the first half of the 1930s when the Bath Town/City Hall on Centre Street had been replaced by the new Davenport Memorial City Hall on Front Street. Nearly 100 years old when demolished in 1936, the Town Hall had served a variety of purposes in its tenure. As Henry Owen's "History of Bath" noted, the two-story structure with full basement was used, not just for town meetings, but also for social gatherings and entertainments. The two front doors near the corners of the front facade were originally occupied by retail stores; the central door reached municipal spaces and a room used as a schoolroom. The old town hall was replaced with a W. T. Grant department store, whose streamlined appearance and Art Deco lettering presented a stark contrast in its 1930s' sense of modernity.
