G.W. Pierce letter from Wheeling, Va., 1829

Description

Writing from Wheeling, Virginia, to his parents in Baldwin, George Washington Pierce first described the terrible road conditions on the "National Road" that went west, saying the journey was exhausting and they rarely traveled more than four miles per hour.

He described the landscape on the trip.
