Description

This deckled-edge postcard with its color photograph of the Customs House from the 1980s shows a Customs House that was no longer used as a Customs House and was about to lose its role in the city as a post office.

The building, then owned by the city, served as the home of the District Court. Now a number of business have offices in the city-owned structure.

The postcard shows the early twentieth-century configuration of the mid-nineteenth century structure designed by Ammi Burnham Young (1800-1874). In 1912 the building was almost doubled in size by plans of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury of the time, James Knox Taylor (1857-1929).

The addition carefully maintained and extended the distinctive Italianate style of the original, which remains a landmark on Bath's Front Street

Eastern Illustrating of Tenants Harbor published the postcard. The photographer was Mr. Hastings.
