Description

Front Street in Bath around 1939, looking north from City Hall. The collection of stores -- Hallett's Drugstore, First National Stores, A. G. Page, Senter's Department Store, Leroy L. Burnham's automotive supplies, and the Colonial Cafe -- was in place from 1936 to 1941. The now-ubiquitous automobile crowds the busy downtown thoroughfare built for older, smaller vehicles, and the trolley has been discontinued and the trolley lines covered over.

Senter's Department Store came to Bath around 1933 and left with other downtown businesses in 1965 as retail moved to outlying shopping centers. An interview with Laura E. Ridgewell, quoted in Maine Odyssey by Kenneth R. Martin and Ralph Linwood Snow, discussed the appealing ambiance of the department store in the late 1950s. "Now that was an elite store, Senter's. That was like Bergdorf Goodman now, or Altman's ... The awning was a little bit special: it was green and white with Senter's written on the front of it."
