U.S. Treasury Department letter to the Bath Collector of Customs, 1884

Contributed by Patten Free Library

Description

A December 15th, 1884 letter with enclosed list from Theo F. Swayze, the chief clerk of the Office of the Secretary, U. S. Treasury Department in response to the letter of November 14th by the Bath Collector of Customs requesting a complete record of "Governmental Officials for Bath." The request was made for the "perusal" of the Sagadahoc Historical Society, a group that was formed in 1877, near the time of the national centennial when many communities were renewing their interest in local, not just national, history. Swayze noted that the federal records did not allow him to confirm the dates of the appointments of two Collectors. On the enclosed statement of Collectors' names and dates of appointment, penciled notations and a name were added.
