Charter Contract, Schooner Platina, 1845

Contributed by Patten Free Library

Description

This three-page contract from May of 1845 described the arrangements and conditions for the transport of some 150 passengers from Antwerp to New York City in the Platina, agreed upon between Captain George Manson of Bath (1809-1882) and the "Merchants and Affreighters" DeCock and Bisschop of Antwerp. The Platina was one of the vessels owned and built by the firm of Charles and William Crooker.

It was launched in 1832 from the Crooker yard near the foot of Federal Street in the southern portion of Bath. The schooner was built under the eye of master builder James Sewall and was 380 tons with a length of almost 117 feet.

Still known as the City of Ships, Bath had many, many vessels of different sizes and purposes constructed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since many of these ships had a home port of Bath, the Customs House was an important and busy location.
