Description

The boy in center is identified as Scot Howard. Several trees and buildings sustained damage throughout Thomaston during a hurricane in the 1950s. No exact date is found on the photo although Hurricane Carol did much damage to the northeast over the period of August 25 to September 1, 1954.

The house in the background is on the corner of Elm and Main Streets, #47 East Main Street. The house may have been built in 1824, although it has been greatly altered. Abner Rice built a house on this site in 1824 and sold it in 1829 to Shepherd Robbins for $1,000. At one time it was sold to Mrs. Clementine, widow of John F. Cole, and she kept a store here. Captain Hugh Peabody lived in the house before he died at sea on January 1847 while on a passage from Liverpool to Charleston, South Carolina on board his ship Rochester of Bath. The house is often referred to as the Captain Peabody House.
