Margaret Chase Smith kicks off her 1964 presidential campaign in Pittsburg, New Hampshire. With her are her associate and advisor, William C. Lewis, Jr. (far left), and her New Hampshire advisor, William Deachman of Plymouth, New Hampshire (next to Margaret Chase Smith).

Skowhegan's Margaret Chase Smith (1897-1995) served in the U.S. House from 1940-1948 and the U.S. Senate from Maine from 1949-1973. She sought the republican presidential nomination in 1964.
