Description
In the hours before she formally announced her candidacy during a luncheon at the Women’s National Press Club, Margaret Chase Smith credited the people of Skowhegan with her decision. The Skowhegan Chamber of Commerce declared January 27th to be “Margaret Chase Smith Day” and Skowhegan as the hometown of Senator Smith. In a telegram read during the ceremony, Senator Smith stated “Please accept and convey to my fellow residents of Skowhegan my deep and humble gratitude for the honor they do me. Their action has been an important factor in my final decision.”
The nine women pictured above participated in the Margaret Chase Smith Day dedication ceremony and represented the various positions held by Margaret Chase Smith as well as organizations to which she belonged. From left to right: Margaret Wentworth (DAR), Dorita Hussey (women’s clubs), Jean Carrigan (BPW Club), Anna Goodrich (office manager), Clara Dugas (secretary), Faylene Cleveland (waitress), Marion Knight (teacher), Pauline Greene (telephone operator), and Isabelle Thornhill (store clerk). Each woman wore a rose pin labeled “Margaret Chase Smith for President.”
