Main Street, Ellsworth, ca. 1910

The gateway from the south to Ellsworth’s Main Street business district was this steel bridge, which was swept away in a May 1923 flood that caused $300,000 in damage to the town.

The old crossing was quickly replaced by a new concrete arched span known as the Union River Bridge.
