Letter to Muskie on environmental work, 1971

Contributed by Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library

Description

Michael Phinister of Royal Oak, Michigan, wrote to Sen. Edmund S. Muskie, a Maine Democrat, praising his work on behalf of the environment, but noting that "there is still great room for improvement" to curb pollution.

To stress his point, Phinister enclosed photos he had taken while on vacation that showed pollution. The photos were from sites in Michigan, New York and Massachusetts.

The letters "PW", which were written on the letter by a member of Sen. Muskie's office staff, stand for "Public Works". This abbreviation was used to indicate that the letter related to a matter before the Senate Committee on Public Works, the committee that handled the Clean Air and Clean Water acts.
