Summary page from the Androscoggin River Technical Committee's 1948 report.
From 1943 to 1977, Dr. Walter A. Lawrance, a Bates College professor, with assistance from other researchers produced reports on the condition of the river.
The study followed a similar model each year, beginning in the early summer and concluding in the early to mid fall. The first report, produced in 1943, was dedicated to determining the intensity and cause of the river's noxious odor in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
By 1948, the annual report was produced by the Androscoggin River Technical Committee, led by Lawrance, and was expanded to include press coverage on issues relative to the Androscoggin River and pollution control efforts, and reports on using sodium nitrate as a means of supplying oxygen to the river water.
