The crew of the Southern Cross before the start of their 1928 flight from Oakland, California, to Australia -- the first trans-Pacific flight. From left are navigator Harry W. Lyon of Paris Hill, pilot Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, radio operator Jim Warner and co-pilot Charles Ulm. Lyon and Warner were American and Smith and Ulm Australian.
