Description
Samuel Blyth (1783-1813) of the British Royal Navy, commander of the Boxer was killed in September 1813 in a battle with the American brig Enterprise, whose captain, Lt. William Burroughs, also was killed. The Americans were victorious in the battle, Sept. 5, 1813. The two men were buried side by side in Portland's Eastern Cemetery in a funeral with military and civic honors. The image of Blyth as well as an account of his life, of the battle, and of the funeral appears in The Naval Chronicle for 1814, London: Joyce Gold, 1837, V. 32, pp. 441-473.
