J.M. Brown from Morris Island, S.C., 1863

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Capt. John Marshall Brown (1838-1907) of the 20th Maine Infantry wrote from Morris Island, South Carolina, about the siege of Fort Sumter.

He tells his sister Nellie (Ellen) that he was eager to "get a near glimpse of the famous fortress that has become so historic in this war."

He then notes that he is tired of the siege and comments on the difficulty of the situation. He looks beyond the war to appreciate the setting and to engage with other soldiers in attempting to amuse themselves.
