Samantha Smith at collective farm, 1983

Contributed by Maine State Museum

Description

Samantha Smith of Manchester (second from left), on a two-week trip to the Soviet Union to promote peace, visited a collective farm near the Black Sea town where she met members of a Pioneer Youth camp.

She wrote, "The directors of the farm did experiments on fruit, and they had a table set up out in the middle of an orchard with bowls of absolutely giant fruit."

Smith (1972-1985) had written to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov asking him if he planned to start a war and urged peace. He invited her and her parents, Arthur and Jane Smith, to visit the Soviet Union.
