Description

George W. Pierce, a student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, wrote to his brother Josiah Pierce of Gorham about an incident at the college in which some students protested a comment the minister, Mr. Mead, made during a sermon at First Parish Church.

Some students hung Mead in effigy, while some, including Pierce, signed a petition protesting his comments. Pierce assured his brother that the only protest in which he participated was the petition.

Students were quite upset, Pierce reported, and there was a breach between students and the town.
