Description

Josiah Pierce of Baldwin, a student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, wrote to his father, Josiah Pierce of Baldwin, commenting on the July 4 celebration and noting that he could "express my gratitude for freedom as well in my study or in the woods as in a dissipated assembly."

He wrote that he did not think the celebrations that were held did much to "cement our union, enlarge our political views, strengthen the sentiments of patriotism, or increase our gratitude to the Author of our mercies."
