Description
This hotel, built in 1888, was Sanford's principal hostelry for nearly half a century. It was a modern establishment for its day, boasting hot and cold running water, electric lights and even a few private baths.
The hotel served as the Sanford terminus of the Mousam River Railroad and was the scene of several meetings in the late 1890s to plan the extension of the railway to Kennebunk and Cape Porpoise. In this photograph it can be seen that rails had not yet been laid for the trolley line.
The hotel went out of business at the beginning of the depression and was torn down in 1934. A succession of banks including Casco Northern occupied this site for many years. As of 2013, the last bank was converted into a Verizon store.
