Richmond Island Harbor, 1851

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Alexander W. Longfellow (1814-1901) of Portland surveyed a small harbor off Cape Elizabeth in 1850 to support a planned engineering project to construct a granite breakwater to improve the anchorage in the harbor, a safe haven for vessels in bad weather.

The breakwater was not constructed until 1873.
