Description

Nicknamed "Czar" Reed for his control over the U.S. House of Representatives while Speaker of the House from 1889-91, 1895-99, Thomas Brackett Reed of Portland got his start in politics as a member of Maine House of Representatives in 1868.

He then served in the Maine Senate, as Maine attorney general and, from 1877-1899, as a U.S. Representative from Maine's First District.
