Description
The concrete body of an ammunition magazine at Fort Preble in South Portland is exposed when the earthen cover was removed for fill for a building at the Maine Vocational Technical Institute. The magazine was used during the Civil War and expanded during the Spanish-American War. At various times the magazines held bagged powder, mortar ammunition for disappearing rifled artillery and 90 mm anti-aircraft shells.
