The Cumberland Shipbuilding Co. in South Portland in a photo taken about 1918. Portland can be seen in the background.

During World War I, the government commissioned wooden cargo steamships designed by Theodore Ferris. The Cumberland Shipbuilding Co. built Ferris ships that were used for moving cargo to support U.S. troops.
