D. B. Prince of York, Pennsylvania, wrote to Josiah Pierce of Gorham asking that Pierce's daughter, Nancy, be allowed to continue her teaching position in York.

Nancy Pierce (1834-1893) did continue the job, leaving when Confederate troops marched into the city in June 1863.
