Description
Gov. John Hubbard (1794-1869) wrote to Josiah Pierce of Gorham about establishing a female seminary in Gorham. Hubbard wanted to ensure that it was for females only.
The Gorham Academy, for boys, was established in 1803 and opened in 1806. Girls were admitted the next year. In 1834, the girls and boys schools were separated.
The 1850 law established the Maine Female Seminary, ending the existence of Gorham Academy. A new Gorham Male Academy was then established.
