103rd Infantry's commanding officer, Donald C. Metcalf letter to Emma P. Stowell (1861-1957) of Freeport, about the bravery her son, John Arthur (1894-1918) showed in action and stating that such conduct, "...upholds the best traditions of our beloved New England, our State..."
