Description

Cyrus J. Hall (1834-1907) was the founder of the Standard Granite Company in Hall Quarry, the village that also bears his name.

A native of Belfast, he was educated as a teacher but he chose to leave the profession to start his own small lumber and granite business in Belfast. He eventually branched out to Mount Desert Island.

His first quarry was in Otter Creek. After studying the island he discovered a better stone in the Somes Sound area. The Sound was wide and deep enough to allow for the large ships that were needed to move the granite on. He named his company the Standard Granite Company.
