Description
Wedding portrait of Charles Ames Washburn and wife Sallie Catherine Cleaveland. Charles was the son of Israel and Martha Benjamin Washburn. He was born in Livermore, March 16, 1822.
He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1848. He was the editor and publisher of the "Alta Californian" and later of "The Times" in California. In 1861 he was appointed by President Lincoln Minister Resident to Paraguay. He married Sallie Catherine Cleaveland in New York on May 11, 1865.
Charles also invented "Washburn's Typeograph" and sold the patent to the Remington Company.
