The Hannah Weston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Machias reprinted this story, "The Liberty Pole," about events surrounding the capture by Machias residents of the British ship Margaretta in 1775, which has been called the first naval battle of the American Revolution.
The history of the incident is from C. Parkler Ilsley's Forest and Shore, published in 1857.
